Richard Brunton - G4TUT SK

Saturday 29th October 2022

Southgate Amateur Radio NEWS

If you follow amateur radio current events you are probably aware of the Southgate Amateur Radio News website.
We are sad to announce the passing of Richard Brunton, G4TUT.
Richard died at age 77 as the result of a fall on the 21st of October 2022.

The callsign may not be familiar to you, but for many years Richard was editor of the Southgate Amateur Radio News website which had a significant international following.
Each and every day, Richard would search the world’s ham radio and technology resources seeking out stories of interest and publishing them. Beyond the straight news items and specialist sections of his site, Richard encouraged non-commercial podcasts and blogs to promote ham radio opinion and stimulate debate on the essential subjects of the day.
He also compiled the ‘CQ Serenade’ weekly programme which was broadcast throughout Europe on Shortwaveradio.de and other public-facing media.

Richard himself was an intensely private man who had no close family, but he reached thousands of friends daily through his website.
Amateur radio has lost a statesman and a stalwart whose dedication to amateur radio was valued and enjoyed by so many.

Clouds Around Galaxy Andromeda
Andrew Fryhover

Explanation: What are those red clouds surrounding the Andromeda galaxy? This galaxy, M31, is often imaged by planet Earth-based astronomers. As the nearest large spiral galaxy, it is a familiar sight with dark dust lanes, bright yellowish core, and spiral arms traced by clouds of bright blue stars. A mosaic of well-exposed broad and narrow-band image data, this deep portrait of our neighboring island universe offers strikingly unfamiliar features though, faint reddish clouds of glowing ionized hydrogen gas in the same wide field of view. Most of the ionized hydrogen clouds surely lie in the foreground of the scene, well within our Milky Way Galaxy. They are likely associated with the pervasive, dusty interstellar cirrus clouds scattered hundreds of light-years above our own galactic plane. Some of the clouds, however, occur right in the Andromeda galaxy itself, and some in M110, the small galaxy just below.

The K7RA Solar Update

Monday 24th October 2022

Sunspot activity took quite a plunge over this reporting week (October 13-19). Average daily sunspot numbers declined from 114.9 to 57.3, while equivalent solar flux values went from 155.3 to 119.6.

Geomagnetic indicators were slightly lower, with average planetary A index going from 13.3 to 10.6, and middle latitude A index from 10.4 to 8.1.

A new sunspot group emerged on October 13, two more on October 15, another on October 16, one more on October 17, another on October 19 and one more on October 20.

I should note that the middle latitude A index for October 18-19 are my own estimates. The Fredericksburg, Virginia magnetometer was offline for a 24 hour period spanning both days.

The Wednesday forecast of solar flux shows a peak at 160 during the first week in November.

Predicted daily flux values are 115 on October 21-22, 120 on October 23-27, 130 on October 28, 155 on October 29-30, 152 on October 31, 160 on November 1-8, then 150, 140 and 135 on November 9-11, 130 on November 12-13, 135 on November 14, 138 on November 15-17, and 140 on November 18-21, 145 on November 22-23, 150 on November 24, 155 on November 25-26, then 160 from the end of November through the first week in December.

Predicted planetary A index is 5 on October 21-23, 12 on October 24, 15 on October 25-26, then 12, 15, 12 and 20 on October 27-30, 15 on October 31 through November 1, then 18, 15, 12, 20, and 8 on November 2-6, 5 on November 7-9, 18 on November 10-11, then 15 and 8 on November 12-13, 5 on November 14-15, 12 on November 16-17, 8 on November 18, and 5 on November 19-21, then 15, 12, 15, 12 and 20 on November 22-26, 15 on November 27-28, and 18 on November 29.

Despite lower solar activity, worldwide 10 meter propagation seems strong this week, probably boosted by seasonal variations as we head deeper into the Fall season.

Celebrating 100 Years of the BBC

Monday 17th October 2022

On the 18 October 1922, the Marconi Company and other equipment manufacturers formed the British Broadcasting Company, which became the British Broadcasting Corporation six years later.

To mark this momentous date exactly 100 years on, members of the BBC Amateur Radio Group have been invited by Arqiva to operate for the day at the Daventry transmitting station that was home to so much of BBC shortwave broadcasting over the years.

Members of the BBC and Arqiva clubs will be operating HF on Tuesday, 18 October 2022 from the Empire Service Building at the Daventry site.

As well as GB100BBC, the callsign G2LO will be on air.

2LO was the callsign allocated to the very first BBC transmitter, built by Marconi and located at Savoy Hill in London.

Keep an eye on the GB100BBC QRZ page for more information.

New Transponder Bandplan for QO-100

Friday 14th October 2022

At the 2022 AMSAT-UK Colloquium on Saturday 8 October 2022, a new narrowband transponder bandplan for the QO-100 geostationary amateur satellite was announced.

Among other changes, AMSAT has allocated a new ‘broadcast’ spot frequency which is intended for the news services of amateur radio organisations.

The RSGB’s news service GB2RS has been transmitted via QO-100 for some time and has already clocked-up 70 broadcasts.

It is very popular, with an audience within the footprint of the satellite which covers almost half of the world’s surface.

Following this announcement, GB2RS will be moving to the new broadcast frequency of 10489.855MHz with immediate effect.

The transmission is at 0800UTC every Sunday.

Perhaps in the future, the news services of other amateur radio organisations will follow the RSGB’s lead and make use of this special allocation to reach a diverse international audience.

CY0S Sable Island DXpedition NEWS
Wednesday 12th Octob0er 2022
The following was posted on the CY0S: Sable Island DXpedition Web page (https://t-rexsoftware.com/cy0s/news.htm), October 5th:
A lot of DXers have inquired about Sable Island after Hurricane Fiona made an almost direct hit on the island. Hurricane Fiona had the lowest barometric pressure (931 MB)
ever recorded in Canada during any previous hurricane.
Fortunately, the news is better than expected on Sable Island. Parks Canada personnel on the island report some of the buildings lost sections of siding and some roof damage.
The Parks Canada personnel described the damage as superficial. The NavCan METAR (Meteoro-logical Terminal Air Report) system was inoperative for 5-6 days until
technicians could travel to the island to restore the system. The hurricane caused some erosion and reshaped part of the island. A researcher who has been on the island for
almost 50 years reported it was the worst storm she has ever experienced on the island.

The Art and Design of Ham Radio

Friday 7th October 2022

The Daily Heller column in Print magazine features amateur radio QSL card design

The article by Steven Heller KC1CKR says:

... for the real transmitting fanatics, CB radio was never the ultimate thrill. Ham or amateur radio was the ultimate means to reach out and touch somebody, not just a mile or two away, but given the proper weather conditions, hundreds, even thousands of miles from one’s personal radio shack (which in my case was a corner of my bedroom).

Whether CB or Ham, one of the prizes was making contact and sharing addresses. In return, the operators mailed out and collected QSL cards. QSL means either “do you confirm receipt of my transmission?” or “I confirm receipt of your transmission.” It can also mean “please send me a QSL card.” These are usually about the same size as a postcard, often elaborately decorated to express individuality.

They routinely showed a call number, place of origin, time, date, frequency, reception quality. Some had illustrative elements, others just type. They are still used, often sent digitally. Although Ham is still practiced, the internet has pretty much taken over.

For Standards Manual, the graphics associated with this tech were a revelation, and on Monday the indie publisher will release its latest book, QSL? (Do You Confirm Receipt of My Transmission?), a collection of over 150 QSL cards, showcasing the often overlooked visual history of amateur radio. Upon seeing an archive from the collection of designer Roger Bova, the Standards Manual team was amazed by the graphics, says Jesse Reed. “The cards reveal a rich typographic expression that is rare in their authenticity—each card a personal reflection of the station’s operator.”

December YOTA Month

Friday 7th October 2022

IARU Region 1 Youth Working Group reports during the month of December, several youngsters under the age of 26 will become active with YOTA suffixes in their callsigns

The idea behind this is to show the amateur radio hobby to youth and to encourage youngsters to be active on the ham radio waves.

The last time YOTA callsigns hitting the air waves was from the 10th annual YOTA Summer Camp in early August 2022. Nearly 100 youngsters were activating various bands and modes. This shall be continued in this year’s 10th edition of the December YOTA Month activity.

Every ham radio operator can support the youth worldwide! By making a QSO with them, they can improve their skills on air and learn more about geography and ham radio abbreviations, among others. The youngsters will be happy to get some attention and exchange information. Licensed and unlicensed youth will be making QSOs, be aware this could be their first radio contact ever and give them a chance to experience a possible new hobby.

Help your local youngsters to get on the air throughout the December YOTA Month. Either you are a supporting elmer or under 26 years yourself, contact your society’s youth coordinator to be active with your national YOTA callsign(s). If your society did not apply for one yet, feel free to encourage them to do so of course. It will be a pleasure to work a lot of new youngsters on the bands for sure!

As every year, there is again an award program available. Work as many YOTA stations on as many bands and modes as possible and be eligible for your Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum award for free. Furthermore, there will be wooden plaques for the best achieving radio hams worldwide available once again. The various categories will be announced once we are getting closer to the event itself.

The DYM program promotes the radio activity on the air waves and shows that there is and will be activity in the future. Visit our website events.ham-yota.com for more information about the award rules.

Last year the worldwide participation of IARU member societies in all three regions was at a never seen high while counting 62 active stations. The youngsters achieved nearly 120,000 QSOs and over 2,000 free awards were downloaded from the DYM website. Therefore, let’s participate in December YOTA Month, and achieve big numbers together once again in December 2022!

Feel free to follow the activities on our homepage as well as on our social media channels @hamyota and @hamyota_official and update yourself at
http://events.ham-yota.com/

On behalf of the DYM Organizing Committee,
Kind regards | 73

Hurricane Ian: Amateur radio used in rescue

Thursday 6th October 2022

Fox News reports a Maryland firefighter used his ham radio to send rescuers to Florida's Sanibel Island

The broadcaster says:

Dale Klonin [KC3TAU], a firefighter at Baltimore/Washington International Airport in Baltimore, was off duty and busy running errands last Wednesday when he stumbled upon a chance to save lives.

Klonin, 46, lives in Hampstead, Maryland. As an amateur ham radio operator with an interest in "any news or weather event," he was keeping an eye and ear on Hurricane Ian.

"Of course, the hurricane was pretty big news," Klonin told Fox News Digital in a phone interview.

Thinking about family members who live outside Sarasota, Florida, Klonin and his wife "were pretty concerned" about the storm, he said.

Klonin has only been involved with ham radio — also called amateur radio — for about a year, he said.

Scout Jamboree On The Air

Thursday 6th October 2022

This year's JOTA takes place October 14-16 and enables Scouts around the world to use amateur radio to contact each other

IARU Region 1 reports:

The JOTA is an annual event in which Scouts and Guides all over the world connect with each other by means of amateur radio. Short-wave radio signals carry their voices to virtually any corner of the world. It’s the shear excitement of having a live conversation with a fellow Scout or Guide at some other place in the world that attracts so many young people to this event. JOTA is a real Jamboree during which Scouting experiences are exchanged and ideas are shared.

The use of amateur-radio techniques offers an extra educational dimension for Scouts. Many grasp the opportunity to discover the world of wireless radio techniques and electronics. Thousands of volunteer radio amateurs assist the Scouts over the JOTA weekend with their knowledge, equipment and enthusiasm.

Let’s connect with the worldwide Scouts and share the fun of our common hobby with them.

Internet Archive looking for Amateur Radio material

Thursday 6th October 2022

Thanks to funding from the ARDC Foundation the Internet Archive is building an online Digital Library of Amateur Radio and Communications (DLARC), they are asking amateurs for material

“I want the obscure stuff, the locally-produced ham radio newsletters or the smaller magazines, that sort of thing,” the archivist said

An Internet Archive blog post says:

Internet Archive has begun gathering content for the Digital Library of Amateur Radio and Communications (DLARC), which will be a massive online library of materials and collections related to amateur radio and early digital communications. The DLARC is funded by a significant grant from the Amateur Radio Digital Communications foundation (ARDC) to create a digital library that documents, preserves, and provides open access to the history of this community.

The library will be a free online resource that combines archived digitized print materials, born-digital content, websites, oral histories, personal collections, and other related records and publications. The goals of the DLARC are to document the history of amateur radio and to provide freely available educational resources for researchers, students, and the general public. This innovative project includes:

• A program to digitize print materials, such as newsletters, journals, books, pamphlets, physical ephemera, and other records from both institutions, groups, and individuals.
• A digital archiving program to archive, curate, and provide access to “born-digital” materials, such as digital photos, websites, videos, and podcasts.
• A personal archiving campaign to ensure the preservation and future access of both print and digital archives of notable individuals and stakeholders in the amateur radio community.
• Conducting oral history interviews with key members of the community.
• Preservation of all physical and print collections donated to the Internet Archive.

The DLARC project is looking for partners and contributors with troves of ham radio, amateur radio, and early digital communications related books, magazines, documents, catalogs, manuals, videos, software, personal archives, and other historical records collections, no matter how big or small. In addition to physical material to digitize, we are looking for podcasts, newsletters, video channels, and other digital content that can enrich the DLARC collections. Internet Archive will work directly with groups, publishers, clubs, individuals, and others to ensure the archiving and perpetual access of contributed collections, their physical preservation, their digitization, and their online availability and promotion for use in research, education, and historical documentation. All collections in this digital library will be universally accessible to any user and there will be a customized access and discovery portal with special features for research and educational uses.

Australia's ACMA proposals on Class Licensing and high power – WIA working on response

Wednesday 5th October 2022

Author : Roger Harrison VK2ZRH

A Working Group has hit the ground running to develop the Wireless Institute of Australia’s response to the ACMA’s proposal on Class Licensing and high power operation by Advanced amateurs.

Deadline for responding to the ACMA’s proposals is 29 November. The ACMA intends to implement the proposed arrangements from 1 July 2023.

Leading the Working Group is the WIA’s Regulatory Counsel, Peter Young VK3MV.

Peter has been licensed since 1965 and has a background in maritime communications engineering. He is a former Regional Manager with the ACMA in Melbourne and, since retiring, held positions with the WIA as a director in the WIA Board, director with the Region 3 International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) and on the Spectrum Strategy committee.

Members of the Working Group come from a wide variety of backgrounds and experience, but particularly having experience in preparing persuasive responses to government proposals, expertise in RF engineering, in science, and in the machinery of government. Members also have interests in contesting and DX, home design and construction, and propagation.

The first meeting of the Working Group was held by Zoom on Monday 3 October, which identified key issues to be addressed in developing the WIA’s response and setting regular meetings.

Firstly, it is clear that we will have to address the Class licensing questions, and the matter of Advanced amateurs wishing to use high power, as separate issues.

As we’ve done before, a survey of the Australian radio amateur community will be held to gather viewpoints and suggestions from individuals, groups and WIA Affiliated Clubs.

Look out for regular despatches from the WIA Working Group on the ACMA’s Class Licensing proposals.

A big dangerous sunspot

Wednesday 5th October 2022

One of the biggest sunspots in years has just rotated over the sun's northeastern limb. AR3112 has a mixed-polarity magnetic field that harbors ene for strong X-class solar flares.

The appearance of this dangerous sunspot could herald two weeks of high solar activity as it transits the Earth-facing side of the sun. Full story @ Spaceweather.com

Don't miss the next solar flare: Subscribers to our Space Weather Alert Service receive instant text messages when strong solar flares are underway.

Contests: Information from WA7BMN

Sun: Six maybe more sunspots. Huge sunspot AR3112 has a delta-class magnetic field that poses a threat for X-class solar flares.

According to NOAA forecasters, multiple CMEs are heading for Earth. ETA: Oct. 4th. This could be a "Cannibal CME" event. Cannibal CMEs form when a fast-moving CME devours one or more slower CMEs ahead of it. The combined cloud contains tangled magnetic fields that can do a good job sparking auroras. Storm levels could reach category G2 if/when the Cannibal arrives.

The Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Program is seeking formal and informal education institutions and organizations, individually or working together, to host an Amateur Radio contact with a crew member on board the ISS.  ARISS anticipates that the contact would be held between July 1, 2023 and December 31, 2023. Crew scheduling and ISS orbits will determine the exact contact dates.

To maximize these radio contact opportunities, ARISS is looking for organizations that will draw large numbers of participants and integrate the contact into a well-developed education plan.

The deadline to submit a proposal is November 13, 2022.

Proposal information and more details such as expectations, proposal guidelines and the proposal form can be found at  https://ariss-usa.org/hosting-an-ariss-contact-in-the-usa /. An ARISS Introductory Webinar session will be held on October 13, 2022, at 8:00 PM ET.   The Eventbrite link to sign up is:  https://ariss-proposal-webinar-fall-2022.eventbrite.com

The Opportunity
Crew members aboard the International Space Station will participate in scheduled Amateur Radio contacts. These radio contacts are approximately 10 minutes in length and allow students to interact with the astronauts through a question-and-answer session.

An ARISS contact is a voice-only communication opportunity via Amateur Radio between astronauts and cosmonauts aboard the space station and classrooms and communities. ARISS contacts afford education audiences the opportunity to learn firsthand from astronauts what it is like to live and work in space and to learn about space research conducted on the ISS. Students also will have an opportunity to learn about satellite communication, wireless technology, and radio science. Because of the nature of human spaceflight and the complexity of scheduling activities aboard the ISS, organizations must demonstrate flexibility to accommodate changes in dates and times of the radio contact.

Amateur Radio organizations around the world with the support of NASA and space agencies in Russia, Canada, Japan and Europe present educational organizations with this opportunity. The ham radio organizations’ volunteer efforts provide the equipment and operational support to enable communication between crew on the ISS and students around the world using Amateur Radio.

Please direct any questions to  ariss.us.education@gmail.com  .

 About ARISS:

Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) is a cooperative venture of international amateur radio societies and the space agencies that support the International Space Station (ISS). In the United States, sponsors are the Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation (AMSAT), the American Radio Relay League (ARRL), the ISS National Lab-Space Station Explorers, Amateur Radio Digital Communications (ARDC) and NASA’s Space communications and Navigation program.

The primary goal of ARISS is to promote exploration of science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics topics. ARISS does this by organizing scheduled contacts via amateur radio between crew members aboard the ISS and students. Before and during these radio contacts, students, educators, parents, and communities take part in hands-on learning activities tied to space, space technologies, and amateur radio. For more information, see www.ariss.org.

Central Coast Amateur Radio Club News

Tuesday 4th October 2022

We start this week with the sad news of a Silent Key. Long time member Ross Mudie passed on September 23 leaving behind his wife Sue, sons Sam and Peter, and grandchildren Cameron, Emily and Hamish. Ross was a founding member of the CCARC and much of the equipment he was involved in constructing is still in use at VK2RAG. The club passes it’s condolences to his family. Vale Ross Mudie.

The club rooms at Kariong are open every Saturday.

At the VK2RAG Somersby repeater site, the D-Star, Rad-Net DMR and 2m Echolink services are fully functional. The D-star systems have had their connection timetable now includes the Monday morning International D-Star net, Wednesday AR Newsline and Sunday WIA news. Voice announcements have been added for notifications of timed changes. Brand Meister DMR and 70cm Echolink and IRLP are still on the sick list.

The club has a Web SDR at Somersby. Websdr.ccarc.org.au is configured to listen on 6 metres, 2 metres, 70 centimetres and 23 centimetres.

Last Saturday’s Show and Tell was a success once again, especially considering the weather. Col VK2ZCO showed his AC volt monitor and his SLA battery capacity tester. He gave a short lecture on the principal of how the tester worked and its application, which was quite informative.

Show and Tell is on the last Saturday of each month. Our next Show and Tell on October 29th, will run with the theme: What powers your shack? Bring along your power supply and any other odds and ends that help to power your shack. There will be a short lecture on how to modify an ATX computer power supply to run other equipment.

There will be a “Portable and Picnic” day held at Terrigal Haven on October 15 between 11:30am and 4:00pm. Members, family, and visiting or prospective hams are more than welcome. See our social media for more detail.

The daily Morning Tea Net is held at 10:00am each morning and after the VK2WI broadcast on Sunday mornings.

The Thursday evening net is held at 8:00pm on the same repeater and echolink conferences.

The Morning Tea and Thursday night nets are held on the VK2RAG repeater – 146.725 MHz with 91.5Hz tone, and on echolink through the HAM and CCARCNSW echolink conferences.

The Thursday night net is also video streamed live to the club’s Facebook page and recordings can be found in the “Videos” section.

You can find out more about the CCARC, our upcoming social events and other details that we can’t tell you about here on the web at ccarc.org.au, by phone on 02 4340 2500, or on social media by searching for “Central Coast Amateur Radio Club”. Remember to give the club a “like” to follow for any updates.

Swiss ban on the sale of Anytone transceiver

Tuesday 4th October 2022

Switzerland's USKA reports the AnyTone AT-D878UV Plus transceiver has been added to OFCOM's list of Prohibited Devices

A translation of the USKA post reads:

Unfortunately, we had to realize that the following popular amateur radio has been added to the list of prohibited devices of OFCOM:

ANYTONE AT-D878UV PLUS
https://nkgdb.ofcomnet.ch/de/v6qCwr54pAsZBQLCR

Apparently, this device has been tested according to the ETSI standard EN 300 086 (PMR standard) and has not completely met certain criteria.

In our opinion, however, the ETSI EN 301 783 standard applies to amateur radio. We are of the opinion that the said device meets this standard and can therefore be used for amateur radio.

We are therefore in talks with OFCOM to clarify the legal situation.

The USKA considers it reasonable that these devices continue to be used until the legal situation is clarified.

However, we would refrain from a new purchase at the moment.

For the USKA.

Bernard Wehrli, Department of Authorities and Antennas.

In orbit the GENESIS-G and GENESIS-J satellites

Tuesday 4th October 2022

Spain's national amateur radio society URE reports two new Spanish amateur radio satellites are now in orbit

A translation of the URE post reads:

The GENESIS-G and GENESIS-J satellites of AMSAT-EA (Vocalia de Satélites de la URE) are already in orbit after the successful launch of Firefly's Alpha vector, which has left spectacular images, including views of the Picobus ejector moments before the deployment of the satellites. It is noteworthy that in just a second attempt after last year's failure, Firefly has managed to reach orbit and deploy satellites, a feat that normally requires 3 or 4 launches when it comes to new rockets. The launch has occurred from Vanderberg air base in California (USA) at 7:00 UTC to an orbit of 300 km and inclination 137 degrees.

The satellites are also named ASTROLAND-1 and ASTROLAND-2 and are due to the sponsorship of the project by astroland Planetary Agency.

As on the previous occasion, two experimental thrusters are flown, although, this time they are from the Madrid company IENAI Space and, unlike the previous GENESIS mission, these use a liquid ionic fuel. Only GENESIS-J/ASTROLAND-2 is functional. The GENESIS-G/ASTROLAND-1 carries the electronics but without the fuel.

The frequencies and working modes coordinated with IARU are as follows:

GENESIS-G/ASTROLAND-1
145.875 MHz uplink, Modes: VOICE FM (without undertone) and FSK 50 bps, AFSK, AX.25, APRS 1200 / 2400 bps
436.888 MHz downlink, Modes: FM voice, CW, FSK 50 bps, FM voice beacon with AM2SAT callsign

GENESIS-J/ASTROLAND-2

145.925 MHz uplink, Modes: VOICE FM (without subtone) and FSK 50 bps, AFSK, AX.25, APRS 1200 / 2400 bps
436.666 MHz downlink, Modes: FM voice, CW FSK 50 bps, SSTV Robot 36, FM voice beacon with AM3SAT callsign

Foundations of Amateur Radio

Monday 3rd October 2022

The Amateur's Code for future generations...

Over the past while I've been discussing the Amateur's Code and its place in our community. I've shown that it was published in 1927, despite credits to the contrary and it's possible that it existed since 1923. I've discussed the original code, how it evolved and what changes have been made across the decades since.

I'd like to take this opportunity to compare the original from 1927 to a revision that I've constructed using the various versions that have been published since. Originally I was going to use the current 2022 version in the ARRL handbook to discuss this, but it's completely different from the one shown on the ARRL website today, which appears to be more recent, that it made little sense to pick one over the other.

Back to 1927, or 1923 if you like, written by Paul M. Segal 9EEA, or W9EEA, Director, Rocky Mountain Division and General Counsel of ARRL.

The Amateur's Code

I - The Amateur is Gentlemanly. He never knowingly uses the air for his own amusement in such a way as to lessen the pleasure of others. He abides by the pledges given by the A.R.R.L. in his behalf to the public and the Government.

II - The Amateur is Loyal. He owes his amateur radio to the American Radio Relay League, and he offers it his unswerving loyalty.

III - The Amateur is Progressive. He keeps his station abreast of science. It is built well and efficiently. His operating practice is clean and regular.

IV - The Amateur is Friendly. Slow and patient sending when requested, friendly advice and counsel to the beginner, kindly assistance and cooperation for the broadcast listener: these are marks of the amateur spirit.

V - The Amateur is Balanced. Radio is his hobby. He never allows it to interfere with any of the duties he owes to his home, his job, his school or his community.

VI - The Amateur is Patriotic. His knowledge and his station are always ready for the service of his country and his community.

It has a certain "quality" about it. Leaving aside that it's written with a male radio amateur in mind, it represents what the character Dennis Denuto in the 1997 Australian movie "The Castle" refers to as "It's just the vibe of the thing".

I present to you an updated version of the code in an attempt at preserving that vibe whilst taking into account that we're not in 1923 any longer:

The Radio Amateur is CONSIDERATE and RESPECTFUL...never knowingly behaving in such a way as to lessen the pleasure of others.

The Radio Amateur is LOYAL...offering encouragement and participation to the global amateur community.

The Radio Amateur is PROGRESSIVE...keeping abreast of science, striving to build and operate their station above reproach.

The Radio Amateur is FRIENDLY...patient; offering friendly advice and counsel to the beginner; kindly assistance, cooperation and consideration for the interests of others. These are the hallmarks of the amateur spirit.

The Radio Amateur is BALANCED...radio is a hobby, never allowing it to interfere with any of the duties owed to home, work, school or community.

The Radio Amateur is SUPPORTIVE...knowledge, station and skills always ready for service to country and community.

Hopefully you've followed along with the evolution of this discussion and find the reasoning for it as compelling as I do. Of course this is just one perspective on what a revised Amateur's Code might look like and I am offering it as a topic of discussion to the entire global amateur radio community. I hope that it provides food for thought, talking points and encouragement to ask questions.

I will reiterate my thanks to the WorldRadioHistory.com website where you can find many of the earliest editions of the ARRL handbook. If you have any of the missing editions, or better copies than those available, I'd encourage you to share them to continue to preserve the history of our community.

I'm Onno VK6FLAB
